Summer 2012/ Ghana
Brief introduction of the internships:
I joined the Global Citizen Programme in the past summer holiday. I have worked as an intern in Ghana which is one of the countries in Western Africa for six weeks. I organized ASK project with other interns around the world. ASK project which stands for Answer, Solution and knowledge to HIV issue is aimed at educating local student basic knowledge of HIV and ways to prevent from getting HIV. We conducted training session with several schools and organized a closing ceremony for the whole project.
Unforgettable moment during the trip:
I enjoyed all the training sessions with the students. They are passionate, energetic and eager to learn. One of the unforgettable memories would be the closing ceremony. We had a competition about HIV during the ceremony. It was amazing and encouraging that many students could remember the knowledge we taught them. I am glad to bring direct social impact to the local community.
Apart from working, I also enjoyed the time having fun with all the interns. I haven’t thought that the first time I went to bar was in Africa. Also, it was memorable as I celebrated my birthday in Africa. It is a tradition that interns around the world will sing birthday songs in their own language to the birthday girl. I received many blessings that day. Through working and having fun together, we all established a close relationship. We even keep in touch when we go back to our home country.
Changes that the trip made on me:
AIESEC Global Citizen is definitely an awesome experience. This reinforces my belief on ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ASK project is my dream project as I am interested in public health issue. I discovered what I am truly passionate about after the trip. I could put what I have learnt in the lesson into practices. This life-changing experience also influenced my personality and the way I live. I become more optimistic and treasure everything and everybody around me. I realized that happiness is a choice not a condition.
